Lose Fat and Gain Muscle – Simultaneously?

Posted by Joel Marion

The start of a new week…the start of a new blog series…about…

Gaining muscle and losing fat at the SAME time!

What inspired the topic?  Well, believe it or not, apart from the many “couldn’t care less about my body” folks lounging around the beach this past weekend, there were actually quite a few really good looking peeps sporting some pretty killer bods!

Lean and muscular – which I think most of my male readers would agree to be the “ideal” physique.

I mean, even if you’re female, you’re bound to want something similar – lean and “toned”, if you will.

Everybody wants a lean, sexy body they can be proud of…that’s why we do what we do.

But just how do you go about achieving THAT body?

Gain muscle first, then lose body fat? Vice versa?

OR maybe you might try to lose fat and gain muscle at the SAME time.

Unfortunately, 99% of people who try the latter option fail miserably.

Can it be done?

Yes. But ONLY with a very strategic approach.

Weight training + fat loss diet does NOT equal simultaneous fat loss and muscle gain.

Sorry, there’s a heck of a lot more to it than that.

Have you ever tried to lose fat and gain muscle simultaneously?  What were your experiences?

Would you like to know how to REALLY lose fat and gain lean muscle at the same time?

At least 600 comments and I’ll be back before you know it to go over several critical components to simultaneous fat loss and lean body mass gain.  And as long as the comments keep coming, I promise to give you killer content on this subject all week.

Talk to you in the comments section!

Joel

I am so looking forward to this article! Happy marriage and post honeymoon happy blessings to you. Okay I’m wondering how I can do both, as I’m totally blind, and my trainers at the gym I work out are insisting that I have to work out with their prescribed work outs. Their mentality is “go big our way, or go home!” (That’s why I’ve been embarrassed to post, as I’ve been unable to use a lot of the work outs I’ve been given through for example the FBF charts. So, anything I can do at home on my own to sort of get my body doing things on its own would be much helpful. I don’t care what obstacles I face! I’m going to do my best to live as healthy a life, and to work out however I possibly can. I love working out and doing my best to eat right! If I have to ask 40 people I will, so I can achieve a healthy result and what works. Well, despite any obstacles? I’ve lost 15 pounds, and gained toned muscle. I thank you Joel and your friends for informative articles you all send.

Hey Joel,

I am looking forward to hearing from you!! So I have tried a few different ways. One way was to eat less and lift more but I just lost fat and gained a little strength. Another way that I am using now is to run every morning (30-45min) and then I eat fruit in the morning and have some other meals as well throughout the day containing meat, leafy veggies (helps to digest foods better), and some carbs (not usually grains). Any snacks are fruit ONLY. I only use the morning run for a wake up and to give me more energy (isn’t a hardcore run that takes my breath away). 50% of my diet now is fruit. I still eat plenty of other foods as well. My gains so far: I have added 5 pounds of weight to each lift of mine every session (workout twice aweek-weighted dips and chins, military press, and curls.) I then have a workout I do once in the middle of the week (squats and deadlifts). I am not sure how much muscle I have gained yet or if I have, but I now have 10% body fat or somewhere around there (which is still lowering, I think). Is there anything wrong with this kind of training/diet. Is it a good way to gain muscle and lose fat?
Thank you,
Michael

I was told that if you gain muscle, you burn more calories even at rest, therefore increasing fat loss- so weight training is a key component for both

To put on mass we must eat more then our bodies require.. To lean up we must do the opposite. I would really like to know how you can do both at the same time.

Can’t wait to read how to accomplish this seemingly impossible task!

Welcome home!

You’re such a tease. Have you been to the “Beach palace” condos in Cabarete. Unbeleivable rooms, beachside entrance from your veranda, very reasonable pricing, ….delicious sun, sand and ocean and 15 restaurants on the beach only a 250 yard walk away. So… cough up some info anf maybe I WILL TO. I’m definitely one who needs to gain muscle and especially lose that belly which firm and hard but rather round.

Later.

I’ve read that after 40 – and especially after 50 – it is increasingly difficult to add muscle mass due to lowered levels of testosterone and HGH being naturally produced by the body. I’m a 52 year old male. Thoughts on either foods, safe supplements or workout regimens that would help? Thanks.

Yeah I do a lot of body building exercises and then try to do conditioning on rest days. For my body it works alright, but I’d like to see some better results.

I run 4 miles 4 days a week and add a 20 minute DVD workout in once a week. I weight train along with this cardio and find the weight training makes me hungry all the time. Then I want to eat whatever is in front of me. Sweets have become a problem under emotional stress. HELP!

Definitely would love to hear how to do this.
