Lose Fat and Gain Muscle – Simultaneously?

Posted by Joel Marion

The start of a new week…the start of a new blog series…about…

Gaining muscle and losing fat at the SAME time!

What inspired the topic?  Well, believe it or not, apart from the many “couldn’t care less about my body” folks lounging around the beach this past weekend, there were actually quite a few really good looking peeps sporting some pretty killer bods!

Lean and muscular – which I think most of my male readers would agree to be the “ideal” physique.

I mean, even if you’re female, you’re bound to want something similar – lean and “toned”, if you will.

Everybody wants a lean, sexy body they can be proud of…that’s why we do what we do.

But just how do you go about achieving THAT body?

Gain muscle first, then lose body fat? Vice versa?

OR maybe you might try to lose fat and gain muscle at the SAME time.

Unfortunately, 99% of people who try the latter option fail miserably.

Can it be done?

Yes. But ONLY with a very strategic approach.

Weight training + fat loss diet does NOT equal simultaneous fat loss and muscle gain.

Sorry, there’s a heck of a lot more to it than that.

Have you ever tried to lose fat and gain muscle simultaneously?  What were your experiences?

Would you like to know how to REALLY lose fat and gain lean muscle at the same time?

At least 600 comments and I’ll be back before you know it to go over several critical components to simultaneous fat loss and lean body mass gain.  And as long as the comments keep coming, I promise to give you killer content on this subject all week.

Talk to you in the comments section!

Joel

P.S.  SNEAK PEEK:  Here’s one of the newest methods we’re using:

i know you can do this with carb cycling according to Tom Venuto but id love to hear your input Joel.

Hm… From what I understand of the two processes, after you get down to brass tacks, fat loss requires a calorie deficit, while building muscle requires excess calories. That may be an oversimplification, but it’s generally considered valid.

I’m guessing that there will be quite a bit of hormone-manipulation involved, in order to achieve both at the same time.

keep it coming! Knowing your writing, this will be a week based on current research and real stuff, not just trendy fads and marketing schemes. You’re a breath of fresh air in this industry.

From personal experience, I can certainly attest to the benefits of both carb cycling and varying one’s intake of total calories from day to day. But using raw coconut oil (92% SATURATED FAT, no less!) has heretofore proven to be incalculably beneficial. I’m the first to acknowledge that any positive results stemming from supplements could conceivably be a mere placebo effect. However, I’ve repeatedly had discernible success using raw coconut oil in conjunction with a reasonably high protein/low-to moderate carb diet. My comprehension of the actual science behind medium chain triglycerides (MCTs, raw coconut oil being a prime example)is admittedly rudimentary at best. I can only say that my strength and flexibility seem to increase, while my overall bodyfat remains consistently low. I would suggest to anyone seeking to achieve simultaneous muscle gain & fat loss (or at least muscle gain & fat maintenance) to investigate for themselves.

This is EXACTLY the type of info I’m looking for!

Hey Joel, I’ve enjoyed reading your tips ever since I started Isabel’s Diet Solution Program. I am 50 and find it harder to lose weight every year. I did lose weight following her program but now I’ve plateaued. Would like to lose about 15 more pounds. Meanwhile, I’ve been reading all yours, Roman’s, Mike Geary’s, Vince’s posts about weight training and I’m having a hard time just making the first step in that direction. I don’t want to look like an idiot at my gym and would welcome your suggestions on how to do the exercises at home. Unlike Isabel, I don’t find cardio boring but am beginning to agree that weight training is the way to go. Help me get started!

Muscles need energy to thrive- even if they arent actively being used. That energy can be drawn from FAT stored in the body as well. More muscle requires more energy hence will burn more fat. Therefore, men should keep fat loss goals aside for the beginning and concentrate on muscle building. Fat loss will accompany and accelerate with muscle build up. Later with a good amount of muscle, even light aerobics will burn a lot of fat just to feed the muscle.

I have been trying to do both for months and I have gotten stronger but haven’t lost as much fat as I thought I would. I can’t wait to learn how to do it properly.

I too tried and failed miserably. Now I want to do it the right way.

loose fat and gain muscle……. a dream, I am stronger, less fit and heavier than a year ago :-( I beat my best time in the last cycle race but felt the worse I ever have after I finished with painful cramps……

So for me a program which continues my muscule gain and looses some weight is fine… but I definitly don’t want to loose that hard gained strength.

I also would like more information on this topic. That’s what’s frustrating when you’re trying to lose weight and not lose any muscle..the progress is SO SLOW!!!Seems like the numbers on the scale don’t go down very quickly. Experts answers are, “you’re gaining muscle, be patient and it will come off”…

It seems those last 5-10 lbs are the most stubborn.
I would love to hear the information you have for us.

High intensity intervals. The high intensity triggers recovery which burns fat, while the challenge builds muscle. The goal for me is not to look like a body builder, but to tone and have a body that will cope with the demands of life and burn calories and fat with ease.

What you eat is important, too, but diet alone will only train your body to adapt to the dietary limitations. Throw out the garbage and the fake health food. Eat fresh and raw when possible, always unrefined/unprocessed. Eat plenty of real protein. My choices are pasture grazed meats, raw whey protein (not isolate), raw pastured eggs, nuts and some legumes (these can be sprouted or soaked and cooked).

Huh? I thought that was what it was all about? Gain Muscle you will loose fat.

Always something I like to make happen! Although for me it’s the losing fat part I seem to have the most trouble with!

I have actually had pretty good luck with a combination of water aerobics and clean eating. In the course of 15 months I have lost close to 90 pounds, and at 51 I look younger and healthier than I did at 35. But I have been on a very frustrating plateau for a while, and am very interested in shaking things up again, since I still have more than 40 pounds to go in order to reach my goal.

Hello, its my first time posting here so i’ll try t be straight forward and get to the point, gaining muscle and losing fat is possible for 99% of the public. All you need to do is do your Weight lifting intensely, and do your cardio intensely and just eat right you will gain muscle, and lost fat at the same time. You just eat naturally cause you are naturally hungrier. And most of your extra calories that you need to build your muscle should come from complex carbs.
