3 Reasons YOU Want Muscle

3 Reasons YOU Want Muscle
By Joel Marion & Vince Del Monte

It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female, 22 or 62, attempting to lose fat or “get buff”, you WANT muscle.  In fact, we’ll venture to say that virtually everyone wants muscle (whether they know it or not), and here’s why:

1.  Building Muscle = Faster Fat Loss

Even if you’re primary goal is fat loss, you’d be extremely wise to build specific periods of time in to your training schedule in which you primarily concentrate on building muscle.

Why?

Muscle is metabolically expensive.

You see, for every pound of muscle you manage to add to your frame, you’ll burn an additional 40-50 cals per day. So, let’s say you gain 10 lbs; that means your body now REQUIRES 400-500 more calories to simply maintain its weight, posing several benefits:

  • You get to eat the same amount and lose fat faster OR
  • You get to eat more and lose fat just as quickly

Either way you look at it, that’s a pretty solid deal, only possible through the addition of calorie-burning lean muscle.

2.  Building Muscle = Easier Weight Maintenance

Let’s say you lose 30 lbs, which is awesome, but you fail to put on any appreciable amount muscle, or even worse, you lose muscle mass in the process (which is extremely common).

In either case, metabolism will in fact be slower after you’ve lost the 30 lbs than it was when you first started your fat loss journey…NOT what you want if your goal is to actually keep the weight off.

With the addition of lean muscle mass, your metabolism won’t be slower, it will be faster, making maintaining your new body incredibly easy.

Muscle is the difference between losing 30 lbs once and for all, and struggling to losing 30 lbs over and over and over again for the rest of your life.

Wouldn’t you love to just lose the weight once and never have to worry about “gaining it back”…again?

3.  Building Muscle = A Hotter, Sexier Body

Being thin is one thing, being hot is another.  And the latter is something only lean muscle can provide.

I think we’d all agree that while being thin is certainly better than being fat, what we truly want our bodies to look like goes far beyond simply being skinny.

For example, take a look at the photos below; these are both “size 2” bodies:

size2

The difference:  one looks “okay” and the other is smokin’ hot.  The REAL difference:  Muscle.  While the same exact “size”, the physique on the right is comprised mostly of dense, shapely, tone muscle, while the image on the left…isn’t.

And for the guys, when it comes to taking your shirt off or being comfortable on the beach, we’d probably all agree that simply being “thin” or “skinny” isn’t where it’s at.  Muscle makes a dramatic difference in the way we look.  Just look at the before/after pics from these two clowns:

vince_ba

joel_ba

While the “before” photos were thin, there’s a world of difference in the confidence and general appearance of a physique possessing significantly more muscle.

How would your life change if YOU were to gain 5, 10, or even 20 lbs of lean muscle?

Both Vince and I can tell you that since our transformation, our entire lives have benefited massively because of one thing:  muscle.  It really can and does affect your entire life.

Is it ok to be losing weight while building muscle? How about sweating a lot and being out of breath when doing 3×15 reps?

You should focus on keeping all your muscle, not building, and focus on fat loss.

You should focus on fat loss until your body fat % is at least 13%. So give yourself 6 weeks to lose that 6% of fat. 1% each week.

Eat protein with every meal to keep your muscle.

Hence I’ve become very cautious and skeptical when I hear claims that this or that program will give me the body of my dreams. I have to be careful with my left shoulder which has been injured in the past, and have basically lost all hope of developing a muscular and attractive body after countless setbacks.

Thanks for the compliment.

Keep searching for solutions and take one day at a time.

Karen, I bet if you incorporated 1 day a week of fasting – nothing but water on a Sunday pm til Monday pm – you would bust that plateau.

I agree that muscle makes you look more fit and definitely burns more fat. thanks for the inspiration!

Whatever you, Vince, Dr K, Mike Geary, and John R are doing is working. Not only do fit looking bodies look a whole lot better, but it’s great to be healthy and feel great. I’m switching between all these programs for variety, but finding the balance on the muscle gain, fat loss, and food intake is proving to be challenging. For 4 weeks my fat content stayed the same and I gained 2lb of muscle. In frustration I reduced my calorie intake which reduced my fat content further, but I also lost muscle and have plateaued again very quickly. Any suggestions for ‘tricking’ my body into letting go the fat without eating like a mouse?

Thanks for the great blog…Looking at the before and after pics of the size 2 women only proves to me that I need to make sure I add muscle while losing weight. Always so concerned about doing cardio to lose weight I often neglect weight training. My question to you is what is best for me, free weights and “machines” or resistance bands? And how often? FYI, I am a female that builds muscle somewhat easily. Oh and Joel and Vinny, you both look AMAZING, ya lil hotties!

Never had trouble getting back into shape until my 2nd child. He really stretched out my stomach. I have an athletic build and I look very toned at 180lbs. I am currently 209lbs and am trying to get back down to that weight. I have the muscle, its the fat that is not going away. I am eating well but getting frustrated. I have even lost 20 pounds in a month before for bobsled but it doesn’t seem to be working now. I am very active but frustrated.

How many pounds of lean muscle mass do you have Vinny? What is your body fat percentage?

To joel

What exercises are you doing to get those arms?

Hey Marios.

I’m around 215 lbs this am… (i’m starting to bulk a bit) and 12% fat… no idea what that. Grab a calculator and multiply 215 x .12 to get my lean mass.

In the grand scheme, don’t worry about measurements or numbers. If you were to meet Donald Trump and could ask him anything, would you want to find out the color of his socks? I would rather know what drives him and what his mindset is.

I encourage everyone to to stop focusing on other peoples measurements and “numbers” and focus on breaking down the barriers of your own mental walls to start expanding your horizons.

Start asking questions that open up the doors to what you really want out of life and then start brainstorming how you can make those things a reality.

Joel and I will guide you there this week and next.

Bro… you need to set your goals higher than Brad and Edward! These guys are just ripped… they have barely any muscle on their frames in this movie. If they had an extra 15 lbs of mass on their body – now that would be impressive.

Good job Leigh. Muscle is not linear or infinite. Your gains will hit a point of diminishing returns – that’s normal – and we’re going to show you the best ways to keep that muscle building in explosive spurts.

I am trying not to focus on the numbers, while I still step on the scale every morning and wish it would read 10-15lb lower. However, in the grand scheme of things, I would rather weigh the same and look less soft and flabby. :)

My brother on the other hand wants to bulk up. I am assuming that this should help us both?

Love the pictures Guys, it really illustrates your point well. People keep telling me, I’ve lost too much weight, and its really annoying, even though my BMI is still about 24.0 So I think some more lean muscle mass will really work for me.

I would love to loose 30 pounds and build dense, shapely, toned abs. I showed my personal trainer your website, and she told me that I would have to go on a very strict diet and weigh all my food. Is this true? If so, would you provide some idea what such a one week diet plan would be?

Great post. Just wondering how you guys manipulate your workouts over a period of weeks- for instance lately I’ve doing doing more dynamic training using 3 or 4 exercises with little to no rest in between. It has helped with the fat loss but i also want to maintain and even gain some lean mass. Thanks.

Thanks guys! Yes, I laughed at the before pictures. But, then the after shots. HOT!!! Being a 50+ female with sciatica, I have to be very careful with weights, movements, etc. But if I pace myself, don’t jump and hold my core tight thru exercises, I can work up quite a sweat. I’m still trying to lose 20 pounds and
gain 10 of muscle. With your help….

The pix present such truth & was just what I needed to keep asking myself in those times of despair where deviating from my meal plan is contemplated – “Will this help or hurt me?”, upon which I conclude deviating is NOT an option! It’s all about making right decisions one day at a time and allowing the days to all add up in reaching SUCCESS itowards goal achievement. It is muscle and wholistic health I am after! I would love to drop about 15-20 pounds of weight and gain 10 pounds of muscle back! Show me the path!

I would like to gain about 5-10 but more in upper body, sepecially for being able to do the incredibly hard pull ups or chin ups.

Reply  |  Quote

I am measuring about 24.5% body fat and I know that is average. I have tried for the past 3 months to lower it by eating clean 85-90% of the time and consistently going to the gym 5-6 days per week. I primarily do weight training and a little cardio afterward. What else can I do to bring by body fat percentage down? I have started to increase cardio, but the fat around my midsection if resisting the hard training. Either that or it’s not happening fast enough.

Thanks for the article, and the opportunity to win. I have made huge progress at the gym in strength, but my whole life have struggled with body fat. Although I see muscle “poking” through, my mid-section has always been my problem. At 230, I am just not satisfied with my progress. Because I have “old” knees (50 years), I don’t do as much cardio as I used to, and I have always been a “good” eater. (Meaning I love to eat!) I enjoy reading your articles, tips, and trying some new workouts at times, and I know with just little changes in nutrition, and exercise I could meet my goals. Thanks for your encouragement guys. Kevin

Considering I have over 100 lbs to lose and am almost half fat according to the BMI I don’t know how much muscle I would need. I’m limited in exercise due to arthritis and lower back pain. Help!

So I’m basically a “skinny Vinny” but I guess you could say “skinny Travis”. I’m a first year university student and I’ve been working out since the first day I got here for the same reasons Vince started working out. I’ve gained about 15lbs so far but I seem to have hit a plateau already. I’m not sure what I should do but I’m not going to give up until I weigh at least 160 lbs before I start cutting.

Since I’m in university it naive to say you will never touch a alcoholic drink (even if you are as dedicated as I am). So my question is: “Is it a good idea to have a fast day after a night of binge or moderate drinking even if you are trying to build muscle?”

I only have one question….. How do i avoid losing my bust? because everytime I attempt to lose weight, i always lose my bust first… Are there any excercises you recommend/avoid???
