3 Reasons YOU Want Muscle

3 Reasons YOU Want Muscle
By Joel Marion & Vince Del Monte

It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female, 22 or 62, attempting to lose fat or “get buff”, you WANT muscle.  In fact, we’ll venture to say that virtually everyone wants muscle (whether they know it or not), and here’s why:

1.  Building Muscle = Faster Fat Loss

Even if you’re primary goal is fat loss, you’d be extremely wise to build specific periods of time in to your training schedule in which you primarily concentrate on building muscle.

Why?

Muscle is metabolically expensive.

You see, for every pound of muscle you manage to add to your frame, you’ll burn an additional 40-50 cals per day. So, let’s say you gain 10 lbs; that means your body now REQUIRES 400-500 more calories to simply maintain its weight, posing several benefits:

  • You get to eat the same amount and lose fat faster OR
  • You get to eat more and lose fat just as quickly

Either way you look at it, that’s a pretty solid deal, only possible through the addition of calorie-burning lean muscle.

2.  Building Muscle = Easier Weight Maintenance

Let’s say you lose 30 lbs, which is awesome, but you fail to put on any appreciable amount muscle, or even worse, you lose muscle mass in the process (which is extremely common).

In either case, metabolism will in fact be slower after you’ve lost the 30 lbs than it was when you first started your fat loss journey…NOT what you want if your goal is to actually keep the weight off.

With the addition of lean muscle mass, your metabolism won’t be slower, it will be faster, making maintaining your new body incredibly easy.

Muscle is the difference between losing 30 lbs once and for all, and struggling to losing 30 lbs over and over and over again for the rest of your life.

Wouldn’t you love to just lose the weight once and never have to worry about “gaining it back”…again?

3.  Building Muscle = A Hotter, Sexier Body

Being thin is one thing, being hot is another.  And the latter is something only lean muscle can provide.

I think we’d all agree that while being thin is certainly better than being fat, what we truly want our bodies to look like goes far beyond simply being skinny.

For example, take a look at the photos below; these are both “size 2” bodies:

size2

The difference:  one looks “okay” and the other is smokin’ hot.  The REAL difference:  Muscle.  While the same exact “size”, the physique on the right is comprised mostly of dense, shapely, tone muscle, while the image on the left…isn’t.

And for the guys, when it comes to taking your shirt off or being comfortable on the beach, we’d probably all agree that simply being “thin” or “skinny” isn’t where it’s at.  Muscle makes a dramatic difference in the way we look.  Just look at the before/after pics from these two clowns:

vince_ba

joel_ba

While the “before” photos were thin, there’s a world of difference in the confidence and general appearance of a physique possessing significantly more muscle.

How would your life change if YOU were to gain 5, 10, or even 20 lbs of lean muscle?

Both Vince and I can tell you that since our transformation, our entire lives have benefited massively because of one thing:  muscle.  It really can and does affect your entire life.

Hello,
First, I want to lose a total of 30 pounds to put myself at about 140, I have weighted that before, but that was before I got married and had two beautiful children. If I wanted to lose all this fat and still be really fit, what would be the best way to stay balanced, as far as, how much fat lose to muscle gain, would be good for me? I really love your blogs and your program that I purchased, I am however still trying to kick my own butt to get started, but I am going to do it this time!! I really appreciate receiving your emails so they are helping me to lean the way of starting your program, I guess I just need to start!!!! Thanks for your motivation!!

Is heavy, “hardcore” squatting really a prerequisite to any proper muscle-building program?

Lookin forward to reading your wise advices.

I am a middle aged female who has been training with weights for several years. I have a very lean and strong physique, yes. You can see my muscles, abs, etc. However I don’t look ‘hot-sexy’ like the girl in your image. Fort that I would have to get breast implants and an (unhealthy) suntan.

Don’t get me wrong – I love being and feeling lean and fit, but I just thought I should point out that losing fat and gaining muscle is alone is not going to make you look ‘hot-sexy’!

Any female can look hot. Tans come in a bottle now-a-days, and boobs certainly aren’t the be-all end all of hotness. I’m sure Vinny would concur.

I haven’t found a woman yet that could go from fugly to drop dead by losing fat, gaining lean muscle, and a little “make over” :)

I just did some math on my weight. I have a body-fat percent measuring scale. Over the past year I have gone from 148 lbs to my current weight of 136… still well above my goal. Throughout this process I have been consistently getting a body fat percent of around 33%. The math says I have lost 4 lbs of fat and 8 lbs of muscle! This despite doing 10000 steps a day almost every day and some mild weight exercises. I guess I need to buck up and do more weight training! This was a real wake-up call.

I have been working hard to gain muscle and burn fat – I am not doing so well – my stomach actually seems to be sticking out more. Is it possible that is muscle and I just need to work more on the fat burning?

Ok, between all you amazing internet trainers, Joel, Vince, Craig, Roman, Holly, Dr K, John, Nick and anyone else I might have left out…you all seem to have innovative and motivating programs to use for muscle gains and fat loss! But what is the basic formula for exercise programming in your opinion if you wanted to gain a lot of muscle strength, enough muscle size (fitness model look not body builder look), and fat loss? By basic I mean reps? sets? rest between sets? circuit training? I’ve been schooled that low reps (6-8) + heavy weight = strength and (10-12) reps + moderate weight = size and high reps + light weight = muscle endurance. Also what about split routines? When are they more valuable or are they ever really necessary? I realize there is more than one way to achieve the same amazing end result but all the info can get fairly overwhelming!!! See, I have the “genetics” :) to gain the muscle size quickly but want more strength and need to burn those last 10 vanity pounds off to get me into the 12-15% body fat range that “girl on the right” has. Thanks guys you rock!

I actually really like this particular photo comparison. I’m much like the first photo right now, but I woul LOVE to look like number two. What I like best on this comparison though, is that the after is not entirely musclebound, nor is she in absolute perfect shape. Look at the bit of armpit skin that most females are self concious about. It’s very nice to see a “hot” picture with the same problem spot.

i have lost 135 lbs over the last 3 years. I have always know I need to weight train to gain muscle. It seems now at 215 lbs it is getting harder to loose more but I know even though i have not lost much in the last month my clothes fit looser does that mean I am loosing fat and giang muscle with no weight loss . Is that possible

As a 22 yr old female thats 5’2 and 124 pounds its hard for me to lose those last 10 lbs…i think adding 5 more lbs of muscle will help me reach my goal. i have good muscle tone but i haves some major flabby trouble areas. MRT and a strict diet will have to be my game plan if i want to feel proud for the first time wearing a bikini in the summer!

Great article. I would love to gain 20 lbs. of solid, lean muscle mass. After that, if I can gain more and also get leaner, that’s awesome!

Vince, I have a question for you about No Nonsense Muscle Building. You mentioned in one of your videos about Maximize Your Muscle that NNMB is a “beginner’s program.” I have been working out for about 2 years, am currently on John Romaniello’s Final Phase Fatloss program. Would NNMB still give me great muscle gains, or should I go for MYM? Thanks.

I’m 57, female and about 20 lbs. overweight. Why I’ll never look like either of the female pictures posted, I would like to lose some weight and gain some muscle. The only problem is two arthritic knees which eliminates jumping, running and squats. Need some alternative suggestions to work the big muscles in my legs without further damaging my knees.

Joel & Vince,
Looking forward to more info and your usual great advice. I’m 50 yrs young and 178 lbs. I don’t know my body fat percentage or know the best way to find out what it is. I have been working fairly consistant for the last year three times per week 45 min/workout. Some Bowflex but mostly body weight circuit type workouts and biking whenever Wisconsin weather permits. I seem to have hit a wall and am maintaining the weight loss and the muscle that I have put on but can not seem to break that barrier where my six pack is readily visible without having to flex to see it. So I’m sure there is additional fat to lose and muscle to gain so that I look toned and ripped without having to flex to get it to show.

Hi Joel and Vince,

I am not looking to win anything, as I have been working with you guys fro a while now adn feel like I have won my life back … give this to someone on the verge of breaking through their barrier to a better self!

I agree with your three reasons, but all of that is surfce (in my humble opinion). THre #1 reason is the huge boost in self-esteem and sel-cnfidence that comes from a tight, lean and strong body that is functioning at it’s best in order to capture the benefits of being “smoking hot” or jaw dropping fit. It can be done, even over 50!

Great day to my foavorite coaches (and ok, Roman too)!

Hey guys thanks for the informative post. I have recently started Dr. K’s DEFL program and it is going well so far. I would love to build 5-10 lbs of lean muscle mass but I don’t want to go to a gym to do it. I spend a lot of time outside and in remote field camps for work so gym access isn’t really an option. Are there body weight exercises or other types of activities that don’t require equipment that you could recommend that help to build muscle? Thanks!

Thank you for the interesting article. I would like to gain muscle, particularly on my arms and shoulders but without making my shoulders and neck so stiff I can’t turn my head. Any suggestions? Best wishes Jo

SHOW ME THE MUSCLE!!!!!

Great stuff Joel… both of you made awesome transformations… and I’m following in your footsteps my brothas. I’ve already put on 30lbs in the past which brought me to 160lbs. Then I got fat… then I got lean…. and now I’m up to 170lbs from 157lbs. 180 here I come!

And yeah, I’d definitely choose the lean, sexy, muscular girl over the other pic… or instead of the “skinny model” type. Just sayin’

Great info!
I’m 60 years old (young) and have been aType 1 Insulin Dependent Diabetic for the past 48 years.
I’ve got good muscle at 5’7′ and weigh 170 lbs. and want to lean (get cut) out.
Most people guess my age at mid-late thirties which is a definitely good thing.
I’ve been an athlete all my life and still train as an athlete. All my high school and college athletes tell me they want to look like me when they’re my age.
I plan on being the first Insulin Dependent Diabetic to live to be a centenarian (100 years old), so I believe that a healthy lifestyle is of the utmost.
Following the previous comments, the transformations that you guys have made is phenomenal.
Thanks for all the encouragement and continue to set the example.

After several months with Joel, I can now eat more on my cheat days and gain less. Gotta love that muscle!

Hi Guys, yet another fantastic post. I’m 5’10 and 158 lb and have just started training 3x per week for 1/2 hour (now into week 3) with interval and weight training whilst also eating well with more protein in my diet and smaller meals. I’ve already started to see some changes in upper arms and thighs. But how long will it be before I see an overall change, and how do I drop body fat/ increase lean muscles – I want to be that sexy girl!

I am currently sitting at 204lbs and struggling to get below the 200. My goal is 145lbs. My physician says I am doing everything right. I tend to struggle with the yoyo effect. If I add together all the weight I have lost in the last few years, only to put it back on and then even more I have lost over 150lbs. That being said, if I could replace some of that blubber with muscles and loose some of that blubber permanently, I would be a happy woman. At my age I do not need the bikini clad body that is going to turn heads. I would be just as happy not being embarrassed wearing a one piece. I am really looking forward to implementing your system and making it work.

@Mary
Mary, I’m almost 60, too—-in June. I’m trying lose enough fat to be able to see my abs, if they’re there. “Buff at 60” sounds good to me.
Do you want to team up with me for mutual encouragement?
Cheers,
Dar

I have done the carb-deplete plus big workouts before with great results on multiple occasions (dropping 30+ lbs). Always felt I could just turn fitness and weight loss on like a light switch. Now that I am getting older (37) have a small infant son, the light switch is harder to reach (and there is nacho sauce on it??)

No is the time for MY change. Put on the extra muscle which will help with my maintenance. Thanks guys

I have seen a tiny difference so far (Monday will be the beginning of my second week of both) and I have lost a few pounds :) I would prolly like to gain maybe 10-20 pounds of lean muscle because that would def help with the weight loss and also help with making my body more toned and healthier looking!

You loved the pics or you loved laughing at them? :)
