What Can Rocky IV Teach You?

Today was Movie Day—a day in which I do nothing but watch movies, and I try to have one at least once a month.

You see, I love movies :-)

And today, perhaps to rekindle my inner child, I spent 91 minutes watching a movie that I literally watched every day for an entire summer when I was 12 years old: Rocky IV.

Now, you may not agree with me that Rocky IV is one of the best movies of all time, but if you’re a Rocky fan at all, you’ve GOT to agree that it’s the absolute best out of all the Rockies (and there will be time to debate that later if you don’t :-)

I mean, what a great story, right? Rocky, avenging his best friend Apollo’s death by defeating the highly-favored, monstrous Russian on his own turf in Russia−even for someone who’s seen it 79 times like me, it’s pretty intense stuff.

But apart from that, even if you somehow didn’t care for the movie (and I can’t imagine how), Rocky IV can still teach you something extremely valuable and applicable to you and your own goals.

And that is, the raw power of motivation.

Let’s be honest, if Rocky had gone in to fight the Drago prior to Apollo or at any other time, under any other circumstances, he would have got his butt handed to him. The dude was a monster, and had Rocky outmatched in every possible way.

But because Rocky had something extremely powerful to motivate him (the fact that this guy killed his best friend), he was able to seemingly defeat some crazy odds and emerge victorious.

Let me ask you a question: What’s YOUR motivation? What is it that gets you up in the morning and over to the gym before work when everyone else is sleeping in?

What is it that allows you to regularly pass up the quick and easy (and frankly, delicious) foods that so many others regularly indulge in?

Do you have a REAL source of motivation? If you don’t, it’s highly likely you’re going to get “knocked out” by all the temptation and “easy ways out” that surround us on a daily basis.

Let’s face it, it’s a heck of a lot easier to eat whatever, whenever, and skip the whole workout thing then it is to live a fit, healthy lifestyle.

You absolutely have to have a very powerful source of motivation, because without one, your toast.

So do you have a source of motivation that keeps you going strong toward your goals each and every day? What is it?

Reaffirm it by posting it in the comments section below to start today off with renewed focus (and if you don’t value your “reason” enough to post it below, it’s probably safe to say that you don’t really have one).

My motivation this year is to get faster, more powerful and generally more athletic. I started playing rugby again, so not getting slammed into the dirt every gives me good motivation :o)

Joel one more thing I loved about Rocky IV was the equipment he used. There were no gym machines in his workouts, just good old real world strength exercises. Think some people could learn from this, to get out of the gym and pull a car tyre about, or sprint up some hills.

My main motivation is honestly just to feel good about myself and the only way I’ve been able to do that is by taking care of ME for a change. As a 46 yr old wife, mother and grandmother, I have spent the last 25 years taking care of everyone but me, and it has taken it’s toll for sure. Please don’t get me wrong – I cherish my family and there’s not a moment of regret in that sense. However, I do feel that I sort of put my life on hold and I’m finally able to get a few minutes each day to put myself at the top of the priority list, so to speak. I wish I would’ve learned long ago how important is to keep “me” on the list at all! Well, better late than never I suppose. :)

I am the head of the my house, tough I am not able to gym and run due to my spine fusion operation I spend time and money on websites like this one gathering reading material to help me where others sites and exercise failed. I am medical boarded and are now the “nanny”
I do walk to keep in shape, have tried some other exercises but failed as it hurts my spine and mussels.
I wished my life could if been that of a celebrity in some movie making millions of dollars.

But o Slay, he plays his roles realistic. My family is my only source for living, and to die is gain as I am a born again Christian, beliving in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour.

I have a couple motivations.

#1 is truly to be healthy and not to have to rely on drugs. I do not trust doctors, hospitals, insurance companies, and pharmaceutical companies at all. I think the entire medical industry is driven by what pays the bills not for us to be healthy. Let’s face it… it’s not good business for them for people to be healthy.

#2 is that I work with a bunch of 20 somethings and I love being able to keep up with or out work most of them.

#3 is that when I get tired of working in the marketing/event staffing field, I want to train people and teach them how to use strength training and healthy eating to stay away from doctors and drugs. I want my body to be it’s best at over 40 and truly prove that age is just a number!

Hi, At 62, my motivation is that my Dad had adult onset diabetes, at my age. He took control and lost weight, meaning his diet had the diabetes under control, no insulin. Just two years ago, a good friend lost the batlle to diabetes, after having his feet removed, little by little. He had part of one leg removed, using a prosthesis. All thru his struggle, he suffered from sores that would heal only to erupt again. He never recovered from his last round of surgeries. It was hard to watch him go, literally, peice by piece. Watching what I eat has helped me lose some weight. Emphysema makes working out had, but I am walking more. And, this winter, shoveling snow has helped me to at least, not gain.

My motivation is to avenge the insults I’ve faced from the woman who used me to get money and when she did leave me, I was 20 lbs over weight and cardiac patient. I’ve got My heart back to healthy level now. Weight is next. My biggest difficulty is regarding diet: I am vegetarian for religious reasons and do rely on others to cook for me. Avoid 99% of supplements bcos I never can tell which one will sneak in some animal innards somewhere.

I’m stoked that so many of you have fabulous, positive motivators. Sadly, though, my buggest motivator is fear. I was a fat child and adult until I lost a lot of weight in my thirties. Now I stuggle with eating and overtraining difficulties. So, yes, my biggest motivator is fear – of re-gaining the lost weight and losing fitness. Many thanks to Dawna and CharityW7 for their great attitide in just keeping going.

The fact that I do not want to resist discomfort anymore, because doing that is resisting development and growth. Plus I’m challenging myself to be captain of a “Walk Across Texas” team, so I gotta step up to the plate! I’m tired of feeling weighed down my own self-conciousness, so I want to liberate myself from it, and truly feel like a beautiful, strong, and confident woman! Oh and I LOVE Rocky! <3

Now that I am in my 50’s I am looking at being there for my
family as long as possible and as healthy as possible. My wife
and I are both commited to getting in the best shape of our
lives. We need the extra energy that we saw our parents not
having and they are having really tough times now.

I’m motivated by being able to do what I want to do: run a mile, do sit-ups/ push-ups, get out that last rep. And I’m motivated by my improvements. If I did 45 sit-ups last month, I’m motivated by my goal of 46 this month. Also, I’m motivated by how I look. I like to be able to feel good about myself, and staying in shape is definitely helpful with that.

After my third heart attack and second procedure i was telling my cardiologist to discharge me from hospital the following day because it was my sons 7th birthday in two days and i was not spending it in hospital,
Hearing my determind attitude to getting home he promptly replied if i don’t change my out look on health matters pretty darn soon i will not be around for his 8th birthdaythen with stoney look on his face and cold eyes he then said “i’m being deadly serious with you dont expect to see his next one” that was five years ago and here i am enjoying all four of my children and 42 pounds lighter in weight,
Don’t get me wrong it has been hard at times but i just look at the people i got around me and then think i owe it to them to make sure i don’t slip back to how it used to be.
So to anyone trying to lose a few i say good luck and don’t ever stop trying to reach your goal you will get there.

I can’t say exactly what my motivation is but what comes to mind is the struggle to be better. To reach perfection rather than be perfect. Because no one in the world can be perfect, but we can always try. Physically speaking that is what motivates me, like trying to be batman.

I am motivated to get and maintain optimum health because of the preventable deaths from cancer of my brother at age 51 and my mother and because of the rare form of aggresive stage 3 breast cancer that my sister was diagnosed with a year ago. I have done a lot of reading on what causes cancer and how to prevent it and cure it. I believe that by following a healthy lifestyle of eating properly and exercising that I will be able to avoid the debilitating diseases and ailments that are plaguing man. I am 67 years old and I look and feel half that age. I expect to live a long, active life by practicing the principles I have learned and keep learning.

I have a couple things that are motivating me right now. The first is my children. I want to live long and be able to enjoy doing things with them. The second is that I want to start doing things I haven’t been able to for a while and was told by doctors that I couldn’t. I recently went to a doctor who said I could do some of the things I like, but first I must strengthen the muscles around my damaged shoulders. He said I would hurt, but could still enjoy normal actiovity. That sounds good to me. Another motivator is my wife. She is younger than me and wants to enjoy doing things together. We have only been married about a year.

Motivation…Wow…big word, bigger concept yes? Several motivators for me. Like Sally, I was a fat kid, and a fatter adult. I am 50 now, have 5 grandchildren, and to top it all off, I am a cardiac nurse. One of my biggest fears was being on that cath table some day, and them having to tape my tummy out of the way to access my groin. Heart disease runs in my family. Fortunately, while I am still to heavy, I don’t have high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. I want to “live” with my grandchildren. I want to be able to camp, hunt, ride with them. My husband and I have a house to build, and we are going to build it. My motivation is to LIVE my life, not merely exist until I die! While my father’s side has heart disease, my mother’s side has longevity, often living well into 90’s. I will be a healthy 90 yr old!

I just want to be the sexy lean bitch that everyones hates for once, so i’ve got my sister-in-law to come to the gym with me and i am determined to beat her results at weight loss, fat loss and inch loss.

My motivation is plain and simple VANITY! I am 52 years old, 175cm and 66kg. I am not muscular, however, I still have my toned abs and arms. I am proud of my age and have often been mistaken for a 30-year old. Although, I should be happy with myself, I do have some problems with a little bit of love handle which I am trying hard to get rid of. ;-p
