The Best Diet Tip EVER

Today’s post is going to be short, sweet and to the point.

That said, it may be the most valuable piece of dietary advice that I could EVER give you.

You see, last night around 9:30 PM while watching my DVR-ed episoded of American Idol my appetite started acting up and I began to have some pretty intense cravings.

A couple minutes later, I found myself in the kitchen rummaging through the fridge, cupboards, and pantry looking for something to satisfy my hunger (yes, I’m human and I deal with cravings, too).

After scoping out what was available, I ultimately ended up eating some sliced grilled chicken and big portion of fresh green beans.

Do you know what stopped me from downing a bowl of ice cream or reaching for a bag of potato chips last night?

Simple.  These foods aren’t in my house.

Do you want to end your struggle with late night snacking (with the wrong foods) and increase your dietary adherence ten-fold?  Then here it is, the best diet tip I could ever give you:

Keep your house free of anti-diet food.

Simply put, if it’s not available, it’s not a temptation.

I comletley agree with you, my cupboards are like yours, generally I give up looking for a treat and make myself a hot drink.

I am 70yrs old fit, slim and full of energy. I think older people are not addressed as much by fitness experts as younger people. I have not seen anything about exercise or diet aimed at 70+ other than gentle exercise. Older people are being led to believe they can’t lift a weight above the little pink ones, and as for running!

At home is easy, my problem is at the office. I always try to pack my snacks and lunch. Sometimes I just don’t have time to pack right, or at least not lunch, anticipating I will be going out for a healthy salad for lunch. But then it happens, a meeting runs long, I already ate my mid-morning snack, now I’m craving something and can’t leave for lunch yet. Those Hershey’s miniatures start looking really good. They taste good too. :-( That’s my downfall.

Guess what? It is impossible for me to get rid of all the foods you mentioned, although, I have power over myself most of the time not to eat things I shouldn’t. As a part of our lifestyle where we live, it is very common for my husband to be given candies, cakes, and things we would never buy for ourselves. Now, my husband can eat anything and not gain a lb., but he doesn’t really want me to throw things out if he can eat them. I have thrown things out at times, usually because they are too old to eat, however, gifts keep coming into our home on a steady basis, and we cannot prevent this from happening without being rude. So I find myself with some things I give in to, but usually I give in to mostly only ice cream and dark chocolate, so I assume that these are not the worst things to give in to. My blood glucose level was in the normal range this week at the doctor, even though I am 274 lbs. My blood fats were also all in the normal range. I am not giving in to tons of sugar or fat; and I have even given up bottled juices. If a person is living alone, it is possible to rid the house of all such things to snack on, but if you have a husband or kids, what then? It must be very difficult in some cases.

Great suggestion Joel! I know exactly how you feel. I’ve just started getting back to having my cottage cheese mix each night to get rid of any cravings. It contains: 2 tablespoons of skim cottage cheese, 1 tablespoon of mango-flavoured yoghurt, 1 tablespoon of mixed nuts and 1 teaspoon of flax seed oil. I have found this to be really helpful.

Well I have another tip, that lets you keep cheat day food in the kitchen and still not eat it during the other days! Instead of watching boring TV and being tempted, just go to the gym or ride your bicycle, whatever. You workout, it keeps you away from sweets and other salty foods, only benefits! Works for me at least :) I never have any cravings after working out.

I disciplined myself years ago to not buy junk food and not keep anything in the house worked great till the kids got old enough to go buy their own or worse still -they`ve just started a cooking craze -muffins and patty cakes so now I have to sit and SMELL it cooking too. sigh.

Very true, unfortunately my mother does the shopping and my father’s a sweet tooth so i just have to exercise other methods of keeping the hunger away such as drinking coffee in between meals, drinking 4-5L of water a day and if i start to get hungry before it develops into a full on craving, grab something i enjoy but is still not as calorific as chocolate, ice cream etc, maybe a raw red/orange pepper or carrot

I agree Joel, if there is nasty food in the house I am going to eat it at some point.

Makes you think twice if you have to go outside and get junk food.

Of course having a chinese restaurant right across from my house does not help matters! :o)

Allthough I agree, what helped me best was to first start a diet and just grind it out and stick with it for like 3 weeks. When I accomplished that I noticed that I really did not need to eat the junk food and could stand up against my cravings, this feeling of self-control really made me more disciplined in other aspects like sports etc.

I employ this rule when living at home alone. I have no willpower if something is in my house, but if its not there, I won’t eat it. I might get tempted to buy it in the store but load up instead on celery sticks and the like for munchies.

I noticed when my BF moved in with me, I started gaining almost immediately because I kept food in my house that I don’t normally.

When we both moved in with my mother after my step-dad passed away, it was even worse. My mom has no self-control and is a diet saboteur in the worst way! I kept telling myself, oh, I’ll let it go for now and get back on track next week. That went on for months, *laugh*

Due to circumstances (long story) I am temporary back in my house alone while the BF continues to live with Mom to help her out – and I am back on track with my weight loss – no diet saboteurs in sight! *laugh*

Its hard when you have a family. My husband loves snacks and I can’t convince him to give them up so yes my house is full of temptations. I try to put them in containers up on a high shelf so that they are out of sight. Most of the time unless its a super bad craving, I forget they are even there.

I totally agree!!!i have my own mini fridge and i live with my dad,i’ve tried having anti-diet food in my fridge and not having and it is DEFiNATELY a great GREAT relief when i know i just don’t have any temptations around me, i think it’s the greatest tip because when you work out hard and you are reaching slowly for a goal the food becomes your greatest enemy and friend at the same time,and it’s impossible not to have cravings from time to time,and with bad food in your fridge,even if you don’t eat it ,it makes you suffer and think more than you realize of that unhealthy piece of sugar …..GREAT TIP! and it’s even better to do it!

Well, duh!!!!

…may I add that stocking your larder with healthy snacks (nuts, dried berries, beanito chips, etc…) can also help–just watch the salt.

yeah but if you live 5 minutes away from giant its basically like having it in [or very close to] your house. so yeah i mean this kinda helps and maybe helps some people..but not me unfortunately ://

thats great but what if that’s not what you want to eat. What do you do when you have a craving but you really don’t know what you want to eat. This might be a girl thing but you might munch on some veggies and decide that’s not what your mouth wanted so you go to something crunchy maybe nuts but that still doesn’t do it and you end up with a smoothie but that’s still not it and you could go through your whole kitchen and still not find anything to eat. We need to invent a protein patch. They have a patch for just about everything they need one for when you’re humgry but you don’t know what to eat or nothing is appealing.

I know people who bought food processors as soon as the pregnancy test came back positive, and unhooked the TV so it could only play prerecorded shows of their choosing eliminating the barrage of junk food ads on broadcast TV.
To these kids real food was normal because they weren’t raised with anything else. When these kids got older their parents said they were eating all kinds of stuff while their friends wouldn’t eat anything but burgers and chips!
Junk food pushers purposely drive a wedge between parents and kids via “pester power”. It’s time to stop letting these corporations manipulate you and your families.

Great advice. I just went shopping yesterday and did a pretty good job of controlling my purchasing. Late night snacking (gorging) is a chronic issue in my eating habits. More help on this would be appreciated.

I found that if do this, I tend to overeat when I get to it. I found that I am able to have a couple bites (of cheesecake last night), if I’m not so focused on not being able to have it, it just makes me want it more. Since I learned this, I’m down quite a few lbs. It was due to having a roommate who could eat anything. Moderation, and satisfying my cravings makes me not obsess abut it. Now it takes so long to eat a pc of cheesecake at a bite or two at a time, that I end up not wanting any more after a couple ‘tastes’.

Like another comment stated, this would work better if I lived alone.

Wow, that’s as simple as it gets. For all those saying that they have other’s in the household, how about cutting them off from the ‘junk’ foods too? I’m sure it would help the entire family. The tricky part is getting them all on board with your healthy ‘plan’.

I don’t understand why junk needs to be kept in the house for kids. Or why you can’t teach them and control what they eat while they are in your home.

When you want to go treat yourself to a dessert or something that typically wouldn’t be thought of as “healthy”, take the kids out for ice cream or whatever. There’s no reason kids should have to have “junk” food on hand to consume on a daily basis.

Teach your kids that those types of foods are a “once in a while” treat, instead of a daily part of their diet and you’ll not only be able to much more easily follow your own diet, you’ll be teaching your kids critically important nutritional habits that they should be learning at a young age.

You could also go out and buy a snack (ice cream, chips, etc) after work – buy a reasonable portion – enjoy it as a treat then throw the rest out when you’re done.

There are solutions when you want to find them.
