Beer That Burns Fat? Yes.

Posted by Joel Marion

First off, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!  I’m certainly thankful for you – each and every one of you are incredibly special and important me – YOU are the only reason I’m able to do what I love every day and share my passion with so many wonderful people.  Thank you.

Next up – beer :)

So, when it comes to Cheat Days and the Cheat Your Way Thin program, one of the more common questions I receive is the beer question:

“How many beers can I drink, boss?”

Or something akin to that.

Well, within the manual one of the few “rules” I place on Cheat Days is that alcohol consumption be limited.

Why?  Because alcohol intake lowers leptin levels, which is the exact opposite of everything we are trying to do hormonally on a Cheat Day.

So, what then, is the solution?  Well, if you’re looking to get DRUNK, then I’m afraid there is no solution that will suit your lush-ish ways (yes, I know that’s not a word).  However, if you just happen to enjoy the taste of beer and similarly prefer beer as your beverage of choice to wash down your Cheat Day feast, then there is one particular beer that actually may be able to boost your fat loss results:

O’Douls, non-alcoholic.

Fact is, it’s everything that beer is, just without the alcohol, and tastes strikingly similar to most other domestics.  In fact, in a recent “study” (performed in my kitchen) 7 out of 7 people were not able to tell the difference between O’Douls and 2 other alcoholic domestic brews.

So, how can it help you burn fat?

Well, if you’re familiar with the science behind Cheat Your Way Thin, then you know that simple carbohydrates are by far the most effective nutrients for boosting leptin levels.  O’Doul’s contains plenty of simple carbs, without the leptin-plummeting alcohol content (and it tastes just the same…after all, it is beer).

And it also contains ZERO crap carbs, like high-fructose corn syrup (the most common “beverage” sweetener), which has repeatedly been shown to be one of the most fat-promoting carb sources around.

So, for a Cheat Day choice of beer, I gotta recommend O’Doul’s.  Yes, it’s non-alcoholic.  Get over it.

But what if you want to have a beer during the week, not a Cheat Day?  Is that totally off limits, or is it OK to sneak a light beer every so often?

Answer:  Will a light beer on rare occasion totally sabotage your results?  (I know, that’s a question, not an answer).

Considering that most light beers are around 100 calories, if you had 2-3 a week, I’m going to say no, that’s probably not going to make a substantial difference (especially if you’re compensating for that intake via other means [an extra exercise session, decreased cals elsewhere, etc]).

But hey, why not go for the lowest calorie and lowest carb content?  Here are the Top 3 lowest-calorie, lowest-carb beers:

1.  Bud Select 55 (55 cals)

2. Beck’s Premier Light (64 cals)

3. MGD 64 (64 cals)

They’re all less than 3 carbs per 12 oz. and a whopping 2.5% alcohol by volume (that’s how they’re so low calorie).  But, I actually like Beck’s and MGD 64 − full flavor beers despite the minimal calorie content.

So, if you want to enjoy the refreshing taste of an ice cold brewsky (or 5 or 6) on your Cheat Day, go with the leptin-boosting properties of O’douls instead of the leptin-crashing properties of other alcoholic brews.  O’Douls contains the right types of carbs to postively affect leptin (i.e. simple, fast acting, insulin-spiking carbs), while alcohol unfortunately counteracts the intended hormonal purpose of the Cheat Day.

On other days, a 60-calorie low-carb beer won’t do much damage, but it’s all about moderation (limit to a couple times a week and you’ll be good).

By the way, if you’re not using beer and all your favorite foods to lose fat faster every week–especially over the holidays–then what the heck are you doing? :)  Pick up the Cheat Your Way Thin Holiday Edition and get started today with your first big Cheat Day – Thanksgiving!

First, the new look of the blog looks great. Clean and professional. Nothing too distracting. Easy to navigate.

Next, being diabetic, alcohol and I don’t play well together. I’ll still have a drink on special occasions. I just really limit quantity. I was never a big fan of beer, but have tried O’doules and agree with you about the taste.

I’ve actually got a recipe for no-egg eggnog.
1 cup Almond Milk, unsweetened
1 banana
1/4 cup peanut butter (i make my own)
1 tsp cinnamon
4 large ice cubes
Artificial sweetner [truvia, etc] if desired
1 scoop vanilla protein powder (i use ProGrade)
Mix in blender until smooth.

Now I suppose you could add an ounce of rum to be festive.

Very informative post on beer drinking … but where does red wine fit in? Or does it at all?

As soon as you find a way for chocolate to burn calories let me know! I tried for years to learn to like beer (like my college years) and never quite accomplished the task!

I’m concerned about the ingredients in your Protein drink. I am really concerned that all the ingredients are healthy. Are they?

Joel– Great ideas and suggestions! I have been aided by using the protein shake in lieu of an evening meal and right after my late afternoon workout. I find it easy to digest and doesn’t “weigh” me down for the work I do every evening (sermon writing!).

Good post Joel but I have to say that beer in any diet and fitness plan = disaster. You and most of your other friendss are still young with I am guessing very little health issues and so a little beer may not hurt. But over time beer in particular wreaks havoc on your blood lipids and it only takes a few. The next thing you know the Dr has you on a statin drug and then your work outs will suffer and eventually no workouts at all. So for me I do not see the point in your head line except to get some attention which I am sure it worked. I would put more emphasis on alcohol is extremely unhealthy in even the smallest amounts. As far as the new site it is well laid out and includes what seems like all of your network of fitness professionals. Keep up the good work and information you provide. Have a great thanksgiving Russ

O’Douls? Come on. The only brew worth drinking is Guiness. On the other hand, I am in maintenance and omly have a beer once ervery week or two. If I’m gonna drink alchohol, it’s gonna be something I like. There is too much hops in American beers.

I happen to like O’douls. ( or rather grown accustomed to it) Especially the amber. Being the”designated driver” and wanting to participate. it is the perfect choice. Good to know it was helping in other areas as well! Thanks for the info!

What about a glass of wine? What is the best wine to drink to not destroy all of our hard work?

Joel-
Great article about” guilt free” cheat days and how to stay on track with your personal fitness goals. Just because a person wants to get and stay fit, doesn’t mean he/she can’t enjoy the things that they like to eat/drink. It’s about making the “right” choices with variety and moderation. Frequency and consistency are two of the most important ingredients when following an exercise/diet regimen. A person of any age can change the quantity and quality of their lives with applying the knowledge on a consistent basis. You “hit the nail on the head” with this great drink alternative!

Interesting. Not a drinker but interesting thought anyways.

It’s always nice to see a post about beer. Alcohol is so diet unfriendly and most of us do enjoy a few drinks during the week. Thanks for the info on O’Douls and on the other low cal/low carb beers. Out of all of them, MGD 64 is my favorite.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Joel,
While we are on the topic of beer, the beer lovers in my family say that Guiness is nutritious and was created and meal replacement. Debunk the myth or Cheer the Brits for such a creation?

I’ve never been into drinking since I heard about what it does to your leptin levels, but hearing o’douls doesn’t do that, I may try it. That’s awesome

I like the taste of beer when it tastes like delicious hops. Like being hit in the mouth with a brick of hops. O’Douls don’t cut it!

So, this topic pushes the question — are you drinking for taste or effect? Although, those lite beers aren’t really giving you much effect any way. Good post. Happy Thanksgiving.

Love the new design (and the latest content!) I will be sharing that info with all my beer-swilling buddies who need to find an alternate way of getting beer-taste without the killer agents.

My hubby has been drinking O’Doul’s for 20 years, since his doc told him to lay off the alcohol. But it has to be the green label – he finds the brown label and Beck’s version of non-alcoholic beer too bitter.

Another non-alcoholic domestic that I find much better tasting than O’Doul’s is Miller Sharps. It tastes much better to me with the same type of profile as O’Doul’s. The last time I had O’Doul’s it was just awful and kind of musty. It was probably old but I’ve just never cared for the taste of them. Just wanted to provide another option.

Love your website Joel. Great new look. I enjoy all the articles here.

Hi Joel, loved this article because I also like to drink a beer now and then. Would it be possible to write an article re vegetarians, in other words what they can eat if they don’t eat meat? And if there is no tofu available? I have started this diet about 3 weeks ago, have lost nearly 3kg so far and it will be my first cheat day on Saturday. Yay!!! I am sleeping so much better and just feel great. Thank you so much.

Hi Joel, what about Bailey’s or other spirits??? or should I stop being lazy and just go google?? I think your Blog is officially my favourite btw .. And I’m not sure we have some of those beers in Australia – I’ll have to take a list to the local bottle shop and see what they say!!! Thanks again, :) A.

Thanks Anna!

Do a good search for low calorie and non alcoholic wines and you should find some good info (not a wine person myself personally)!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

As far as beer, yes I drink beer but recently I have been drinking Sprit Zero and Seagrams 7. Is that better or worse than enjoying a brewsky?

Again, it’s the alchohol content that we’re trying to avoid, not the calories. Although the high fructose corn syrup in regular Sprite is a good thing to avoid at any time.
