Actual RESEARCH (not hearsay) on Aspartame and Safety

Posted by Joel Marion

Alright, so I ended up causing quite a stir with my post about artificial sweeteners yesterday, and today I’m back to share some research as promised. When talking artificial sweeteners, there are generally two major concerns:

1. Safety
2. Fat Loss

Let’s discuss the research surrounding both. First up, safety.

1. Butchko HH et al. Aspartame: review of safety. Regul Toxicol Pharmacol. 2002 Apr;35(2 Pt 2):S1-93.

In this 2002 paper, over 20 years since the food additive was approved by the FDA, a comprehensive review of all aspartame research to date concluded that aspartame is indeed safe when consumed by normal humans in acceptable amounts (more on acceptable amounts in a minute).

2. Magnuson BA, Burdock GA, Doull J, et al. (2007). Aspartame: a safety evaluation based on current use levels, regulations, and toxicological and epidemiological studies. Crit. Rev. Toxicol. 37 (8): 629-727.

Now more than 25 years later, another safety evaluation found that the weight of existing scientific evidence indicates that aspartame is safe at current levels of consumption as a non-nutritive sweetener.

3. Gallus S; Scotti L, Negri E, Talamini R, Franceschi S, Montella M, Giacosa A, Dal Maso L, La Vecchia C. (January 2007). Artificial sweeteners and cancer risk in a network of case-control studies. Annals of Oncology 18 (1): 40-44.

This study analyzing over 15 years of research showed a clear cut “lack of association between saccharin, aspartame and other sweeteners and the risk of several common cancers”

4. Lim U, Subar AF, Mouw T, et al. Consumption of aspartame-containing beverages and incidence of hematopoietic and brain malignancies. Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers Prevention 2006; 15.

In 2006, the US National Cancer Institute concluded in a study of over a HALF MILLION men and women aged 50 to 69 that there was no statistically significant link between aspartame consumption and leukemias, lymphomas or brain tumors.

A study of over a half million HUMANS showing no statistically significant link between aspartame and cancer, and three other 15-25 year comprehensive reviews of ALL the available research, all finding that aspartame is indeed safe when consumed in acceptable amounts.

That sure seems to ring more factual than someone’s “conspiracy” website to me.

Now, I could have sat here and listed out a couple hundred papers showing no statistical significance, but instead I chose to list the review papers who already included that data in their 20+ year review.

So, you’re probably wondering what’s “acceptable”?

You’re bound to find this interesting…

Based on all available research, scientists first determine the maximum amount of a food ingredient that can be safely consumed daily over a person’s lifetime. Then, just in case they screwed up by 10,000%, they divide this number by 100 and call that the ADI (acceptable daily intake).

Just in case you didn’t get that, the ADI is actually 100 TIMES LESS than what has been scientifically determined to be safe, as an extremely conservative precautionary measure.

So what’s the ADI for aspartame?

The ADI for aspartame has been set at 50mg/kg of body weight (again, this is 100 times less than what has been determined safe).

But to even reach the ultra conservative ADI, a 150-pound adult would have to consume about 20 12-oz. diet carbonated soft drinks, or 33 8-oz. servings of powdered soft drink, or 42 4-oz. servings of gelatin, or 97 packets of tabletop sweetener each and every day.

And people are still worrying about safety issues based on a couple studies done on RATS being fed the aspartame equivalent of up to 2,000 cans of Diet Coke daily. No, that is NOT a misprint.

Before going any further, let me just clarify my recommendations.

1. I do not think non-nutritive sweeteners, particularly aspartame as it’s perhaps the most studied nutrient of all time, are the devil.

2. Despite the ADI, I do not recommend anyone drink 20 diet soft drinks or use 97 packets of Equal daily.

3. If you are drinking a caffeinated beverage, such as Diet Coke, etc, then I would recommend you limit your intake to one can per day.

4. If going with something non-caffeinated, you can be a little more liberal, but the bulk of your daily fluid intake should still come in the form of good old fashion water.

5. In Summary: Drink at least a half gallon of water daily, but feel free to enjoy other non-calorie drinks in moderation (1-3 beverages per day)

6.  Lastly, if you personally as an individual experience adverse reactions like headaches, dizziness, etc, due to the use of aspartame, then don’t use it.  Just realize that you fall into .0000001% of the population and shouldn’t preach your personal experience as truth for all.  One of my friends is allergic to chocolate, but she doesn’t go around telling everyone else that it’s poison.

So it looks like my recommendations are actually 1,000 times less than what has been determined safe, and I’m pretty comfortable making that recommendation.

Alright, this post is already going longer than I anticipated, so I’m going to save the research on non-nutritive sweeteners and weight loss for tomorrow.

At least 100 comments and I’ll be back tomorrow with that data (which you’ll probably find even more interesting).

In clarity and moderation,

Joel

P.S.  My friend Isabel kind of bashes artificial sweeteners in the below video, and while I do NOT agree with that stance, I do agree with just about everything else she shares for losing up to 10% of your unwanted body fat in the next 30 days.  You can check it out here for some eye-opening, actionable tips:

@Kevin

Chrystal Light STILL has artificial sweetener. It is recommended you drink 2-4 Liters of PURE water (nothing added, be it chemicals, or flavouring). As soon as you add something to it, your liver and kidneys have to filter it out. I would say that the only exception is a squeeze of lemon, because it is very alkalizing to the body :)

If the ADI of aspartane for diet coke is 20 12floz. cans a day, why you recommend no more than one can a day?

Count me in with the ” what about weight loss?” group.

It is confusing for most of us who use sweetners instead of refined sugar. I also use natural sweetners such as Agave. Are these safe? What is the difference between nutrative and non nutrative? Your information is very interesting and well formulated. Thanks Greg Windows – UK.

Fair enough, but if its still man made out of some sort of chemical then it was never meant to be comsumed by humans. I say stick to what is natural and GOOD for you. That is GOOD for you cause some natural things aren’t, and you should be right.

Reply  |  Quote

Clearly a controversial subject…but Im with Isabel on this one – natural all the way. Dont toxins (chemicals) simply add to cellulite???

Completely Irresponsible……….when I worked for a Big Brand cigarette company (25 years ago) there was a 2 week training course given to all …. proof from highly respected doctors and scientists and many years of scientific studies to convince us that smoking was completely safe. Ironically most that worked for this huge company didn’t smoke :)………WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!

Hi Joel
Thanks for the paths you blaze and I couldn’t agree with you more.
Good old fashioned moderation is so key to being healthy and fit, inside and out.
Unfortunately, there’s so much stuff fogging up issues by posing as “fact” , that it is no surprise plenty people are misinformed.
Thanks again and look forward to more commonsensical insights.

It is incredible how much people are scared by “chemicals” but they simply don’t realise they eat them everyday.

Even if you had your own vegetables grown in your backyards you would have bought the seeds from somewhere. If you are from the USA, where the legislation about genetically modified seeds is very lack, you may be certain this has been created in a lab.

Maybe the salad or carrot you cultivated yourself suffers from polluted waters, and is less healthy that the vegetables bought in the supermarket. Ever thought about that?

Please stop being so paranoid. We simply have to realise that we live in 2010 and there is hardly anything that hasn’t passed through a lab.

And that is also GOOD. In a complex World like the one we live in today, we can’t afford to have anything that we and our children eat and drink, to be at least chemically examined.

The problem about science is the intention, of course – there are genuine and legitimate researchers and there are slaves of the industries. Like any other field, science can have both honest and biased views. The difference is that with science you can READ YOURSELF and make yourself an opinion. Please don’t express opinions if you haven’t read the papers yourselves and only speak by word of mouth. Thanks.

Cheers

Hi Joel,

I must say that this is a touchy topic to say the least – even when you produce such convincing evidence. I am sure I can put some time aside and dig up studies – by reputable professionals and industry leaders – who would argue the exact opposite of what those studies claim. The fact is in today’s culture, miss information, disinformation and flat out lies are so hard to discern from the truth that even if I were to personally conduct those studies myself, after reading countless opposed papers – I might get the ‘truth’ clouded.

It just too difficult.

To make it easier, I live by a few golden rules:

Rule #1. If its in doubt – why would you/I take the chance? We are not talking about a new technology that might save you a few bills on your electricity or hopefully cut your carbon emissions. We are talking about gambling your your LIFE! I would hope more people would take their health more seriously – especially what with so many people without the basic benefit of health cover…

Rule #2. That leads straight into the next point; follow the money. If there is money to be made and indeed huge sums in almost every sphere what with huge conglomerates and international companies that live off solely off of consumerism, then I get itchy. Everyone wants my business, so they do whatever it takes and in my experience that goes right across from the left to the right, counter claims on products and additives, not correctly informing, negating to mention certain items, committing others and flat out lying. I always trust the mom and pops store far more than a faceless company. Their overheads are huge and they are far more profit driven. Don’t get me wrong – I’m sure Capitalism is great – but someone has to suffer – and many times its us: the consumers. We want cheaper products so they give it to us using cheaper ingredients and most times synthetically producing altogether because its more cost effective… I don’t see my health as being a real concern.

Rule #3. Lastly, which also ties into both is I am not a proponent on the ‘Health Industry’ in general. A business built around the sustainment of human suffering for profit should be abolished. I like to make this a logical argument rather than try stating any medical facts because as I said before there is too many counter arguments by self proclaimed ‘experts’ in the field. Here is my logical reasoning: Medicine has jumped in leaps and bounds in the last 50 years. We have the capacity to do more now than ever – yet we still suffer from items like the common cold. We have a pill for nearly everything and even with enough money to completely cover 3rd world debt poured into cancer ‘research’ over the last 50 years (most by the American people) – we still can’t cure any of it – we can’t even prevent it – or cardiovascular disease or a myriad of other issues and I believe the answer is bad business. Why would ANY business want to kill off its major revenue streams? As long as people continue to get ill, there will be medical expenses. If these illnesses were eradicated altogether, then what would happen to a trillion dollar industry? It would have to change to something else or go bust. So to tie this last point in a little better – I believe adding ‘ingredients’ such as aspartame into our consumables is the perfect way to keep the body in constant flux and suseptable to many things – which would feed those who stand to profit off of your illness.

Pretty much stick to Rule #1 and you will be much better off. I can PROMISE you that ;)

PS: I had to add this as you specifically mentioned it on the e-mail: RATS. If you have ever consumed a pill, had anaesthetics or been administered a vaccination – and I am sure 99.99% of you read have! – those same products were tested first on animals – INCLUDING RATS – to ensure it was safe for human trials… so why is that process good enough but when we turn it around now the rats are no longer comparable? That’s just not using common logic.

Stick to Rule #1 people.

Very interesting. I am feeling quite comfortable with drinking a can of coke zero and suing equal in my oatmeal now. I personally do not think that anything can really affect you in an adverse way unless you put a lot of focus on it. The only thing that can really damage you is your mind. And you have helped me put my mind at ease with this research. Thank you. and I look forward to your findings tomorrow.

This is a very interesting turn of events. I still think that sugar and High Fructose Corn Syrup are poison in your body but honey, aspartame and stevia may not be. I still think that more research needs to be done but most people should just see what works for them. Break down their current diet and remove one ingredient for two weeks. See how that goes and act accordingly.

Adverse reactions and side effects of aspartame include:

Eye
blindness in one or both eyes
decreased vision and/or other eye problems such as: blurring, bright flashes, squiggly lines, tunnel vision, decreased night vision
pain in one or both eyes
decreased tears
trouble with contact lenses
bulging eyes

Ear
tinnitus – ringing or buzzing sound
severe intolerance of noise
marked hearing impairment

Neurologic
epileptic seizures
headaches, migraines and (some severe)
dizziness, unsteadiness, both
confusion, memory loss, both
severe drowsiness and sleepiness
paresthesia or numbness of the limbs
severe slurring of speech
severe hyperactivity and restless legs
atypical facial pain
severe tremors

Psychological/Psychiatric
severe depression
irritability
aggression
anxiety
personality changes
insomnia
phobias

Chest
palpitations, tachycardia
shortness of breath
recent high blood pressure

Gastrointestinal
nausea
diarrhea, sometimes with blood in stools
abdominal pain
pain when swallowing

Skin and Allergies
itching without a rash
lip and mouth reactions
hives
aggravated respiratory allergies such as asthma

Endocrine and Metabolic
loss of control of diabetes
menstrual changes
marked thinning or loss of hair
marked weight loss
gradual weight gain
aggravated low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
severe PMS

Other
frequency of voiding and burning during urination
excessive thirst, fluid retention, leg swelling, and bloating
increased susceptibility to infection

Additional Symptoms of Aspartame Toxicity include the most critical symptoms of all
death
irreversible brain damage
birth defects, including mental retardation
peptic ulcers
aspartame addiction and increased craving for sweets
hyperactivity in children
severe depression
aggressive behavior
suicidal tendencies

Aspartame may trigger, mimic, or cause the following illnesses:
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Epstein-Barr
Post-Polio Syndrome
Lyme Disease
Grave’s Disease
Meniere’s Disease
Alzheimer’s Disease
ALS
Epilepsy
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
EMS
Hypothyroidism
Mercury sensitivity from Amalgam fillings
Fibromyalgia
Lupus
non-Hodgkins
Lymphoma
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

These are not allergies or sensitivities, but diseases and disease syndromes. Aspartame poisoning is commonly misdiagnosed because aspartame symptoms mock textbook ‘disease’ symptoms, such as Grave’s Disease.

Aspartame changes the ratio of amino acids in the blood, blocking or lowering the levels of serotonin, tyrosine, dopamine, norepinephrine, and adrenaline. Therefore, it is typical that aspartame symptoms cannot be detected in lab tests and on x-rays. Textbook disorders and diseases may actually be a toxic load as a result of aspartame poisoning.

THANKS FOR THE INTERESTING RESEARCH….WE ALL NEED THE TRUTH. CAN’T WAIT FOR TOMORROWS POST!

Thanks for the information Joel ,,
but like many others I’m not convinced ,, you’ve sited some interesting studies . About 10 years ago 60 Minutes Australia did a study ot the studies.
Interestingly, whoever commissions the study owns it and can change it as they see fit. If you think the National Cancer Council is above collusion regarding the topic ,check out National Institute of Healths track record regarding their treatment of the authour of a book titled ” You Are not Ill just Thirsty , your body’s many cries for water
Yopu research is insubstantial and hardly thorough no sound conclusion can be drawn fro mwhat you have presented .
Interestingly again in the 60 Minutes program previously mentioned and equal number of studies independently commissioned found quite the opposite , further more the independent studies had no vested interest whilst all those that present no dangerous outcomes as their results all had vested interests . I
am in no way suggesting that you have a vested interested just that the research from an unbiased viewpoint ,, the true scientific approach conclusions significantly oppose consumption of Aspartame

I LOVE that you base your stuff on research!!!! Can’t wait to show this to a few select people :-)

Where’s the studies on the impact of artificial sweeteners regarding weight loss?

Dear Joel this blog was wonderful.. I my self didn’t drink coke for 3 years (diet or usual one) and I’m glad of this… but some times I like to try Non-Alcoholic Beer or Energy Drink like Redbull or Hype and etc… please tell us more about energy drinks … are they harmful for fat loss???

Reply  |  Quote

@ Kevin:
Don’t rant on about chemicals… Sugar table sugar is also a chemical: C6-H12-O6… Water is a chemical… Dihydrogen monoxide… (H²O). Alcohol is a chemical (Ethanol): CH3-CH2-OH…

Water is a dangerous chemical in large amounts: Drink half a gallon a day, and no problems. Drink 10 gallons a day, and you will die either by drowning or by flushing needed electrolytes from your body…

Thank you Joel for checking the (publicly available) facts and presenting them here, though it still looks like this fact still has a long way to go to beat the ambient witchcraft :)
Cheers,
Daniel

I agree with your stance regarding the safety of non-nutritive sweetners. Cancers have been shown to be not related in legitimite studies.

So, where have you plucked this figure of recommending ONE can of diet coke?? You said before it that up to twenty cans was ten times less than the actual acceptable level. Maybe with regards to fat loss this is true, but if your article is about safety of sweetners, I think its more confusing for you to pluck “one can” out of the air without explaining why you are saying that. Common sense might agree with you, but i though we were going on scientific research here??

Reply  |  Quote

@ Dave:

Where are you quoting this from? We need a reference.

Reply  |  Quote

thanks Joel I feel a bit better using sweetners

Nice article , it’s nice to have a serious articles to read now and then , one that shows references to real studies not just an interview with Dr Schmuck that nobody even knows lol.
The other day I read an article that titled something like ‘Hyperprotein diets to help you lose weight … and bones’ and it turned out it was published on a vegetable producer company blog , citing some study done at ‘Perdue university’ (which i guess was meant to be PUrdue) on a population of menauposed ladies. The conclusion was ‘Hyperprotein Diet can cause you to loose bone density’ ^^ pure misinformation.

ps: For those who wonder who paid for a study you just go read it , it’s always written on the serious ones.

Recently I was tested for allergies and Aspartame was one of the items for which I was tested. Turns out I’m allergic to the stuff. I have stopped Splenda too.

Joel, your friend Isabel talks about artificial sweeteners taxing the liver and interfering with the live function. I’d like to hear you comment on this and whether there’s scientific data to back this up or not.
