I never used artificial sweetners because I had heard how bad they were for you and the potential risks associated with their use – however, recently I have started to use canderel in my tea and coffee (one tablet per cup – but I drink quite a lot of tea and coffee everyday – I don’t do soda’s at all though) because I have forgotten WHY artificial sweetners are sooooo bad??? Maybe you can remind me?
Time: 7:12 AM.
Location: a little “fitness” event I attended a few weeks back in Austin, TX.
State: tired.
So what did I do? What 99% of the rest of the world does in that type of situation – I got myself a cup of coffee.
And THEN—believe it or not—I proceeded to pour the contents of two little blue packets to my morning cup of joe.
You should have seen the stares from the fitness crowd.
I immediately checked my zipper, but surprisingly, I was already all-systems-go on that front.
Hmmm.
Why then the stares?
Well, it wasn’t but a couple seconds later when a friend of mine blurted out “you use that stuff??” as if I had committed some moral sin.
My reply?
“Yes… and mostly because I haven’t seen a bit of research to convince me otherwise.”
To which that person said NOTHING.
Frankly, I’m tired of people—be it fitness professionals or just the everyday lay person—making claims, recommendations, and statements based on “what they heard” rather than looking into the actual research themselves.
LAZY.
Now, I’m not saying that there isn’t research out there proving that artificial sweetener use poses substantial risks, I’m just saying that I haven’t seen it, and in fact, the research that I HAVE seen doesn’t seem to even partially validate the whole “use artificial sweeteners and you will surely die tomorrow” phobia that is so apparent amongst much of the world today.
And tomorrow, I’d like to come back and share with you my take on artificial sweeteners, they’re use, and the research I actually use to BACK UP my position.
If you’re interested in that information, drop a comment below. Also, let me know if you use artificial sweeteners, drink diet beverages, or the like – or if you don’t (and why).
At least 100 comments and I’ll be back tomorrow with the information I just promised you, including 8 studies that reveal the TRUTH about artificial sweeteners (or at least something substantially more concrete than simple hearsay).
Talk to you in the comments section!
Joel
P.S. My friend Isabel kind of bashes artificial sweeteners in the below video, and while I do NOT agree with that stance, I do agree with just about everything else she shares for losing up to 10% of your unwanted body fat in the next 30 days. You can check it out here:

For sure no diet soda. If it doesn’t contain sugar and caffiene I might as well drink water.
@Zev Davis –
I agree – honey is a natural product so use it to sweeten drinks. Artificial sweetener tastes just that – artificial
I can’t drink my coffee without splenda.
i used to use quite a bit of equal or splenda but my weight is just not budging. after reading so much against artificial sweetners, i have drastically reduced their intake. being an indian i still do take a sweet meat every now and then but i feel less bloated. a good natural treatment for the joint pains is 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds soaked in a bit of water over night and had in the morning on an empty stomach. to make it more palatable add mollasses or maple syrup. it worked for me post delivery like a miracle

@Karn –
Yep! And your liver… and thus your immune system. So it is not surprising to see so many immune related illnesses and dysfunctions as a result. People who are more sensitive to it usually notice symptoms sooner.
I do not take any type of sweetener in my drinks, but have drunk diet drinks and sweetened food where necessary, I have read articles saying how bad artificial sweeteners are for you, but in some cases cannot see any alternative. Would love to know, a-how it is bad for you. b- what to use otherwise

At one time, it was also said that smoking wasn’t harmful!
I will explain why Aspartame is so dangerous:
When the temperature of this sweetener exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in ASPARTAME converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants.
The methanol toxicity mimics, among other conditions, multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus. Many people were being diagnosed in error. Although multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, Methanol toxicity is!
Systemic lupus has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis, especially with Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers. The victim usually does not know that the Aspartame is the culprit. He or she continues its use; irritating the lupus to such a degree that it may become a life-threatening condition. We have seen patients with systemic lupus become asymptotic, once taken off diet sodas.
In cases of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, most of the symptoms disappear. We’ve seen many cases where vision loss returned and hearing loss improved markedly.
This also applies to cases of tinnitus and fibromyalgia.
During a lecture, I said, ‘If you are using ASPARTAME (Nutra Sweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc) and you suffer from fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting, pains, numbness in your legs,
Cramps,
Vertigo,
Dizziness,
Headaches,
Tinnitus,
Joint pain,
Unexplainable depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, or memory loss you probably have ASPARTAME poisoning!’
STOP drinking diet sodas and be alert for Aspartame on food labels! Many products are fortified with it!
This is a serious problem.
Dr. Espart (one of my speakers) remarked that so many people seem to be symptomatic for MS and during his recent visit to a hospice; a nurse stated that six of her friends, who were heavy Diet Coke addicts, had all been diagnosed with MS. This is beyond coincidence!
Diet soda is NOT a diet product! It is a chemically altered, multiple SODIUM (salt) and ASPARTAME containing product that actually makes you crave carbohydrates. It is far more likely to make you GAIN weight!
These products also contain formaldehyde, which stores in the fat cells, particularly in the hips and thighs. Formaldehyde is an absolute toxin and is used primarily to preserve ’tissue specimens.’ Many products we use every day contain this chemical but we SHOULD NOT store it IN our body!
Dr. H. J. Roberts stated in his lectures that once free of the ‘diet products’ and with no significant increase in exercise; his patients lost an average of 19 pounds over a trial period.
Aspartame is especially dangerous for diabetics. We found that some physicians, who believed that they had a patient with retinopathy, in fact, had symptoms caused by Aspartame. The Aspartame drives the blood sugar out of control.
Thus diabetics may suffer acute memory loss due to the fact that aspartic acid and phenylalanine are NEUROTOXIC when taken without the other amino acids necessary for a good balance.
Treating diabetes is all about BALANCE. Especially with diabetics, the Aspartame passes the blood/brain barrier and it then deteriorates the neurons of the brain; causing various levels of brain damage,
Seizures,
Depression,
Manic depression,
Panic attacks,
Uncontrollable anger and rage
Consumption of Aspartame causes these same symptoms in non-diabetics as well.
Documentation and observation also reveal that thousands of children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD have had complete turnarounds in their behavior when these chemicals have been removed from their diet.
So called ‘behavior modification prescription drugs’ (Ritalin and others) are no longer needed. Truth be told, they were never NEEDED in the first place! Most of these children were being ‘poisoned’ on a daily basis with the very foods that were ‘better for them than sugar.’
It is also suspected that the Aspartame in thousands of pallets of diet Coke and diet Pepsi consumed by men and women fighting in the Gulf War, may be partially to blame for the well-known Gulf War Syndrome.
Dr. Roberts warns that it can cause birth defects, i.e. mental retardation, if taken at the time of conception and during early pregnancy. Children are especially at risk for neurological disorders and should NEVER be given artificial sweeteners.
There are many different case histories to relate of children suffering grand mal seizures and other neurological disturbances talking about a plague of neurological diseases directly caused by the use of this deadly poison.’
If you have any doubt as to whether or not Artificial sweeteners are safe or dangerous, YOU MUST ASK YOURSELF THIS: “Do I want to take a chance on my health if there is the slightest chance that it could be harmful?”
I hope you finish this even if you don’t get the number of replies you want, because I use artificial sweetner is the blue better then yellow?
I use equal every morning in my coffee. I have tried stevia because I heard it was a healthy all natural alternative to sugar substitutes, but I don’t like the taste. I have heard that artificial sweetners cause everything from cancer to fatigue and headaches. I would be very interested to know some facts.
Can it be more harmfull than the sideeffects of being overweight?
Hi Joel,
I don’t take any sugar in my tea/coffee, and do have the occasional Diet coke, so it will be interesting to know more about these sweeteners. It sounds as if there’s a lot of conflicting information out there!
If there were any obvious side effects to the use of these products, then they would have allready found them.
Aspartame is thought to be linked to some type of cancer.
Why has it not been proven then?
It’s very difficult to study the effects of products on humans, we are simply not test tubes in a lab and the researchers would have to control a test person’s life for 100% over the course of many years. This is simply not done.
If you don’t use these products a lot then their is most likely no or very little harm to them. You can even drink poison, without side effects, as long as you stay under the lethal concentration, you wouldn’t even know you drank it. Take it from a chemical engineer.
* No I do not have the research to back this up, this comes from me and what I gathered over the years in college
*Exam period starts next week so I don’t have the time to hit the library and find these research papers
* Please excuse me spelling or English, if there are any mistakes. This is not my native language ;)

I’m not sure if the sweeteners are dangerous but in my lifestyle I don’t have the need for them (drink coffee black). Don’t see anything wrong with people taking them in normal quantities.
But I feel people aren’t overweight because of 2 tea spoons of sugar that they put in their drinks.
It’s the abuse that hurts them.
Anyway – good stuff, Joel

Joel, I know what you mean. Although I don’t drink diet soda or use artificial sweetners as such, I really love chewing gum, and can go through a pack of 14 tabs in no time. However, I always wonder and feel guilty that I may consuming too much of the artificial sweetners that is in the gum.
@Ramondo – Artificial Sweeteners are a neurotoxins, which means they cross the blood brain barrier and kill the cells. THATS HOW THEY PUT THE LESIONS ON YOUR BRAIN. We need to look further than just the caloric count in foods. No wonder we have so many man made illnesses.
I use 2 packets of Sweet N Low in my coffee (about 3-4 cups/day)
I drink caffiene free diet MT Dew during nite shifts at work
and I drink crystal lite diet green tea packets with brita water throughout thwe day and with meals.
Yes, would love to know. I use sweetners in my tea/coffee (Sweetex) and occasionally enjoy a diet coke. I’ve always had a sweet tooth, the alternative is loads of sugar.
I drink at least 5 diet sodas daily and have often wondered if that is harmful to me.
I see nothing wrong with using Splenda as long as you’re not over using it.
Hey! I’d love to hear more. We drink black tea at home, have been for years, sweetened with saccharin. I use Splenda. I try to stay away from anything with aspartame. I will drink a Diet Mountain Dew on rare occassions. Too much aspartame will give me a headache.
THANKS FOR ALL THE INFO!
wow, Joel you have really stirred up a hornets nest here!
I prefer the idea of a natural alternative like Stevia… but it doesn’t taste as good at regular sugar… so I am quitting sugar in coffee
I would really like to find out the truth about artificial sweetners once and for all…I just don’t know whether it’s bad or not
Splenda all the way. A couple packs a day, in my coffee, cottage cheese etc. Hope its ok.
