Do you have this ONE thing?

Posted by Joel Marion

The New Orleans Saints are headed to the Super Bowl.

Why?

Well, if  you ask me, it all comes down to a single word…a single quality…and the city of New Orleans has it:  Resiliency.

You know, in life, in sports, in just about any and every situation, there are lessons to be learned.  And when it comes learning lessons, I’m an open book.

If I can learn a life-lesson from a kid (and I have), I’ll take it.  From a sporting event, I’m “all ears”…

It’s funny, but I often watch football thinking “what can I learn from this…?”

For instance, every year Andy Reid teaches me extremely valuable lessons about the art of coaching and exactly what not to do in leadership type situations.  It’s like a full-out anti-leadership education for free — I’ve learned so much over the years.

On the other hand, the New Orleans Saints have inspired me this year, and I hope by the end of this post they’ll have inspired you as well.

Resiliency, as defined by the Dictionary (by the way, the dictionary does a great job at defining things — seriously, awesome resource for definitions…check it out) is one’s ability to “recovery readily from adversity or change”.

And to say that the city of New Orleans, along with the New Orleans Saints, has exemplified exceptional resiliency over the past few years is an understatement.

From a city destroyed, without so much as a “home” stadium to play in, to 2010 NFC Champions — the whole “turn around” says a great about their team, their fans, and their city.

I can remember several instances where I personally was faced with hardships, obstacles, and various other forms of adversity while chasing my dreams, starting back with my first “transformation” back in 2001.  And you know what?  It happens to everyone.

Adversity and setbacks are a GUARANTEE on the path to success.  Problem is that the vast majority of people lack the ability to fight through adversity.  They lack resiliency.

I want to ask you a couple of questions, and I want you to SERIOUSLY take a moment to consider the answers.

1.  What goals have you set recently?  What dreams do you hold close to your heart?

2. Have you achieved those goals?  Are you still going forward after those dreams?  If not, what have you let STOP you?

The New Orleans Saints battled through a period of complete devastation to achieve greatness.  So many wrote off the city — they said “move the team…New Orleans is done”.

Have people “wrote you off” from achieving your dreams?  Have YOU wrote yourself off?

Where are you now in relation to achieving what matters most to you?  What are you allowing to derail your progress?

I challenge you:  Identify it, and END it today.

Adversity will strike.  It’s inevitable.  It has, and for many of us, it has stopped us dead in our tracks from moving forward.  And yes, I’ve been there.

But today, take a lesson from the Saints.  Embrace resiliency and crush every last excuse—regardless of how valid they are (and they often are very valid)—from derailing your progress any longer.

Get up.

Will something come along to knock you down again?

Yes.  Guaranteed.  And probably sooner rather than later.

But THAT’S what separates the great from the weak.  Uncanny resilience.

And on that note, I’ll end today’s post with one of my favorite quotes.  It’s from the novel Loyal Subject, by Heinreich Mann, and I believe it to be quite fitting:

“Thro’ greatest struggles, the great emerge…and then they shine.”

Go crush it today.

In strength,

Joel

First of all, I must agree that a dictionary generally does a great job of explaining things & can come in quite handy. :)

I totally agree with you here. If you talk to the people who have actually gone and achieved their goals and far more than they ever imagined, you’ll find out that they failed & came into more roadblocks than those who never achieve their goals.

They just know how to fail and get past it & still achieve their goals. We’re all going to fail and have a bunch of setbacks that we don’t anticipate, but those who push and overcome those setbacks are the ones who achieve their goals.

I think one of the biggest things that has helped me succeed is when I encounter a problem, I make sure I never say “Can I overcome this?” because lots of people say that, and they end up quitting.

Instead I always try to say to myself “How can I overcome this?”. That one little word makes a huge difference, and it basically doesn’t give me the option to fail. I have to figure out a way to overcome whatever gets in my way.

It doesn’t matter how many times I fail, how many obstacles I have to overcome, I just keep asking myself “How can I get through this & achieve my goal” and eventually I achieve what I am aiming for.

the saying goes “if at first you don’t succeed, then try and try again”
i would amend this to: if you haven’t succeeded, keep trying until you’re where your heart wants you to be!
(that little word “keep”!)
seriously, keep trying and remember that those hurdles are just another kind of workout – as long as you keep trying you WILL arrive at your destination.

Hello! I just like to thank you Joel for posting the above.. that is really encouraging.. And I can personally say that it feels great when you practise and develop a resilient mind! So often the things that hold us back from aspiring and achieving all that we desire are other people’s voices ringing in our ears, or chemical patterns in our brains, just firing as they’ve habitually done so, saying no to change. But when you step out of that zone, say no to the excuses, doubts and fears, that’s when you truly do get to shine. Thank you!

Dear Joel
Firstly, welcome again we really missed u , Secondly, thanks for this inspiring lesson.. But would u let me add to Resiliency another magic word, Yes it is ” malleability”. As a teenager I had asked my physics teacher why can’t we break that spiral by hammering in spite that we had broken that hard stone. He said that the spiral was malleable. I had tried to know what was that malleability until I discovered It was ability to absorb shocks and to return back unchanged. by this malleability the tall tree could live in the very strong wind and many many other examples we can see in life.
Today u added to malleability another amazing mean by resiliency which is not only return unchanged but return more stronger.

yes Joel everyday in our life should be a new lesson.

Kind regards

1. I herniated my dic in the summer of 2008 and also was struggeling with poor genitics via high cholesterol. My goal was to get back to my previous lifting stength and size and at the same time diet to bring down my cholesterol numbers.

2. I am now in better shape than I have ever been in and my numbers are the lowest they have ever been for my cholesterol!

New goal: become rich and share my wealth with others in need since there are many! ;-)

Hi ! Great post, thanks for sharing.. And great example too – couldn’t have agreed more.. I too live similar to those principles.

Much of my life goes by the saying “everything’s possible until proven otherwise” and like Shawn says, when bumping into obstacles I choose to look at it in a constructive way by asking “how can I overcome this/how can I move on?” instead of in a destructive way e.g. “can I?”..

So when I go around telling that I want to coach people regarding to fitness and nutrition, before I even have an education (at the age of 18 that’s my dream right now and I’m slowly but steadily working towards it) and whilst still being a high school student, and people tell me I can’t because no one’ll listen to me, or there isn’t a market for an uneducated or whatever, I just stand right up, look ’em right in the eyes and tell ’em “I wouldn’t know until I tried would I? So I guess I’ll figure that out before long”.. And believe me when I say that people think I’m crazy !
I have to say I’m from Denmark, and we have something we call “Janteloven” (can’t translate it), but what it essentially is is a set of 10 “rules” (or what I should call it) that says all these things like: you’re no better than us, don’t think you’re somebody, don’t think anybody likes you etc.. And that’s just useless, because a lot of Danish people actually involuntarily live by these “rules”, so when I tell them I want to do this and that, and I believe I can do it, they practically just laugh in my face..

Actually – it’s down right depressing ! Not meant in a way that it bothers me, but I think it’s depressing that anyone lives by such crappy rules (sorry ’bout the language) !!

You and Vince really seems to live with a mindset everybody wants, and I’ve been trying to do the same for years now (from before I even knew who your guys were). So what I just want to say is: Keep up a good mindset, have a dream, have faith in that dream, overcome the obstacles along the way – and live it !!
Just be great, feel superior, and don’t mind people who fill your ears with negative words.

In heart and mind
Morten, DK

Wise words indeed. One addition could be this: If you fail, it means that your timing, method or approach was not the right. So instead of keep trying using the MO and fail again and again, try something else! Think outside the box, get out of your comfortzone and try something new!

I don’t care much for “trying”. Whenever someone says “I tried”, it’s usually followed by, “but I couldn’t do it.” You either do something or you don’t. There’s no trying. Another great word to add along with KEEP (by Cristine) is the word UNTIL! Keep working UNTIL you reach your goal. Keep moving UNTIL…Keep doing UNTIL… Keep trying UNTIL? Sounds negative to me, but maybe it’s just me. Trying is like giving yourself permission to fail. “Well, at least I tried!” Don’t quit UNTIL!!!

First of all i just can thank you again bro you and Vince are the best :D
And i have to say that you have to fight nomather what your goal is…
My goal was it to lose some pounds of fat that my side is not so flabby and i got it. But did i stop then? NO i gave me the goal to become ripped and lean so i’m working out like hell :) does it work? yes sure but just if you have the your head and heart combined and move forward :).
I belive that everybody can get the best in live nomater if its the girl/boy of his/her dream or the body you derserve…
Just dont give up! Keep your head up and fight and you WILL get what you want.

Wishes from germany your friend Björn :)

Good to have you again at the blog, hope you had had a nice weekend.

Great post. I was inspired by the game too. And not only because of the city. I was impressed by the fact that the Saints took 21 YEARS just to have a winning season. Let alone an NFC title.

I’m 30 and I want to go to college, despite my age. Thanks to this I feel less worried about it.

Thanks for this post. I set HUGE 2010 goals and it has taken a lot of resiliency to get where I want to be. My goals and big dreams are written down and posted so I can read and remember on a daily basis why I want to do what I’m doing.

Roadblocks and negative people interfere, but I keep my head strong and continue to focus what is written on the paper. I’m going to add the word “resiliency” to the bottom of the page. Thanks again

You could say the same about both Superbowl teams. The Colts had 8 (count ’em!) fourth quarter comebacks this year. They’d weather the storm early, figure out what opponents were doing by halftime and then come out of the locker room and CRUSH THEM. Resiliency. If you want football as an allegory, the two Superbowl teams this year couldn’t be better examples.

For me, to be resilient is to emerge out of the adversity stronger, wiser and better

Joel,
I must say, “WHO DAT!!!”

The Saints have been an inspiation this year, that’s for certain, and for those of us who are longtime fans, it’s almost been to good to believe. They have not only been the epitome of resiliency, but also of work ethic and drive. Two other things one must tap to “keep at it.” They are living proof that hard work gets results. Excellent article today, sir!

@David
Bravo David!!! I live 16 years in America and never got to understand : at least I tried or at least I participated. My question is always – and did you achieve the goal? Did you get the result? The result is what counts, not trying or participating.

Wowie. My goal was twenty pounds and I have lost a whopping 13 lbs since I started your program (combined with stop eat). My goal now is another 15lbs.
I like to keep things in perspective to keep me inspired. If my goal had been 25lbs I would have been discouraged. But now I am encouraged. RESILIENCE!
By the way to the other blogger, I am 54 and I will be going to college this spring to become a Graphic Designer! No retirement here. I intend to be taken out of my art studio feet first!
Thanks!

I live in New Orleans and could not agree with you more Joel. The degree of struggle we have been through since Katrina has been overwhelming, but I have to say that the tension during Sunday’s game was also stressful!
Sometimes determination isn’t enough and you have to change up your original plans in order to overcome obstacles. Forging ahead has meant dodging left and right and turning around and going a different direction. With the end goal in mind, and being able to be resilient to see all your options, you will get there. It’s been a long road for us, and we were left for done, but not any longer!
For those of us in New Orleans I say thank you for this post!

I like your post. As someone who is totally blind, I’ve had a lot of people try to stop me from following my dreams of working out and they try to stop me from my dream to be a psycho therapist. I am working toward completing my Psychology digree and have started a high intensity work out. Thanks, keep up the good work
